Choosing What We Become

By: Rev. Dr. Harold Marrero

This Sunday, UU Miami gathers at the close of our May series, Evolution Within Us: From Cosmos to Consciousness, to bring the story of evolution home. We have traveled through the birth of the universe, the living code of DNA, the emotional life of humanity, and the powerful future now unfolding through science and technology. Now we turn toward the life of this congregation and ask a quieter, more immediate question. What are we becoming?

A congregation is a living system. It carries memory, hope, anxiety, grief, tenderness, conflict, love, and possibility. It is shaped by the people who have cared for it, the stories that have formed it, the choices that have guided it, and the dreams still waiting to be lived. UU Miami is more than a place where services happen. It is a community of becoming, a shared body of care, practice, learning, service, and imagination.

Annual Meeting Sunday invites us to see congregational life as spiritual life. The decisions we make together, the leaders we trust, the ministries we sustain, the resources we steward, the relationships we nurture, and the future we choose all belong to the deeper work of community. These are the ways values become visible. These are the ways love becomes organized. These are the ways a congregation learns who it is.

Like any living system, a congregation can repeat old patterns or become more conscious. It can move from anxiety, or it can move from purpose. It can cling to what is familiar, or it can listen for what life is asking now. It can preserve what is life-giving and release what has finished its work. This is the practice of communal maturity, the ability to remain connected, thoughtful, and grounded while making choices that matter.

Annual Meeting Sunday is an invitation to practice that maturity together. We gather to listen with care, to choose with clarity, and to remember that the future of UU Miami is something we shape through shared responsibility. Every voice, every act of service, every offering of time, attention, and generosity becomes part of the congregation’s unfolding life.

At the heart of this Sunday is a simple truth. Communities evolve through choices. A congregation becomes itself through the way it welcomes, repairs, decides, dreams, and serves. This Sunday, we gather as people still becoming, trusting that what we choose together can help UU Miami grow into a clearer, braver, more compassionate expression of its deepest values.

May we come with gratitude for what has been. May we bring honesty to what is before us. May we move with courage toward what is still possible. And may we keep becoming, together.
