Friends,
November invites us into a holy kind of abundance. Not the kind measured by wealth, but the kind measured by care. Each Sunday this month, as part of our Cornucopia of Commitment series, we are gathering stories, compassion, and food for our neighbors across Miami-Dade who face hunger and food insecurity every day.
When we hear of families choosing between rent and groceries, or of children going to school hungry, we are reminded that hunger is not an act of fate. It is the result of choices made by those who have forgotten that governing is a moral calling. Yet our response does not need to be partisan to be prophetic. Feeding one another is not a Blue or Red responsibility. It is a human one. It is the call of conscience that transcends politics and party lines.
We know what kind of world we live in, and we know who suffers when compassion is absent. So let us be the ones who act. Let us show our city what UUMiami is all about: bold justice, unyielding love, and practical compassion.
Throughout the month of November, I am inviting each of you to bring nonperishable food items to UUMiami every Sunday. Large bags of rice and beans, canned goods, dry cereals, non-dairy and shelf-stable milk, pasta, boxed meals, each item will add to our growing cornucopia. Each gift will become nourishment for someone who needs to know they are not forgotten.
I have a personal goal in my heart for what we might gather, but I am leaving the outcome to the movement of your compassion. The more we bring, the fuller our cornucopia will become, and the more we can offer to those most in need. Together, our shared generosity can turn a season of gratitude into a season of transformation.
In a time when indifference has become too common, let us be the exception. Let us be the ones who refuse to look away, who fill baskets with hope and hearts with courage. Let us feed both body and spirit, and in doing so, make visible the truth that abundance grows when it is shared.
Bring what you can. Bring what love inspires. Bring it each week.
And together, let us fill the cornucopia until it overflows.
With gratitude and steadfast hope,
Rev. Dr. Harold Marrero
Minister, UUMiami
