The Lessons of La Paloma: LGBTQ Women Throughout Time (S & YouTube)

The Lessons of La Paloma
Three decades before Stonewall…
there was La Paloma.
In 1937, La Paloma was a nightclub in then unincorporated Dade County that catered to “Homosexuals in evening gowns, trousered lesbians, and prostitutes.” On November 15, the KKK raided the club and threatened to burn it. A few weeks later, it was reopened presenting a satire performance of the raid. What lessons can we take from our community’s lost LGBTQ past? And how does this story intertwine with UU Miami’s past and present?
